IT WAS ALL DECIDED. Tycho would go with Wilder by autovan to a friend’s house where she could pick up spare parts to build another experimental prototype a-grav machine. Then they would go on to Wilder’s tree house, which Tycho would check wasn’t being watched before she went in to collect Piddle and Puddle. Quinn would arrange two shuttles to land nearby—one to transport Wilder and her pets, and the other to carry the a-grav machine parts and other supplies.

Tycho estimated it would take them most of a day to accomplish everything she needed to do before leaving to board the Opportunity. Quinn said he could have the shuttles in place by late afternoon. Stephie objected to the entire plan.

“I’m sure you’ll be perfectly safe here,” she said when she came down into the basement to see what was taking Tycho so long. “No one knows you’re here.”

“Except for the kids and the grand kids,” said Tycho.

“Yes, but they wouldn’t say anything to anyone.”

“Are you sure?” asked Tycho. “Little Bobby’s only five. Do you think it’s safe to trust a five-year-old to never mention someone collapsing at the front door to his grandparents’ house?”

“Well, what if he does? Who pays any attention to a five-year-old’s prattling?”

“Stephie,” Wilder said, “I know you’re worried about me, but I do think this is the best option. Besides, I’m dying to get back to work on the a-grav machine. The fact that I think I’m millimeters away from a solution is driving me nuts. If I have to wait until I’m better and Cherry has no more excuses for locking me up, I think I might go crazy.”

Stephie’s expression of doubt and concern remained.

Suddenly, Wilder chuckled.

“I don’t see what’s so funny,” said Stephie in an offended tone. “I care about you, Wilder. I don’t want you to come to any harm. When you’re up in that starship, you’ll be all alone. What if you take a turn for the worse and no one’s there to look after you?”

“Wilder won’t be alone,” said Quinn. “A minimal crew remains aboard the Opportunity at all times. I’ve decided that I will board the ship, too, as a crew member.”

“You’re going to be with me?” Wilder asked. “Fantastic!”

“But a Fila can’t help you if you have a medical emergency,” Stephie said.

“My medical emergency is over. All I need is time to rest and recuperate. A couple of weeks aboard the Opportunity will give me that and more besides. I understand your concerns, Stephie, and I’m sorry for laughing just now. It was only that I was reminded of when you were twelve and begging to be allowed to come and live in my tree village. Now our roles are reversed.”

Wilder was actually being kind in consideration of Stephie’s feelings. She was adamant she would take up Quinn’s offer, whether Stephie agreed to it or not.

Stephie looked downward. “Gosh, you’re right. I was forgetting. I changed my mind. You didn’t stand in my way then and I won’t stand in your way now.
